Further details announced in $10,000 reward in SC State campus shootings

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Through the generous support of an anonymous donor, a reward of $10,000 for information leading to the arrests and convictions of those responsible for the two tragic shootings Oct. 4 on South Carolina State University’s campus has been established.

The reward will be distributed as follows:

  • $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction in the first incident at Hugine Suites.
  • $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction in the second incident near Poplar Hall.

The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division is leading investigations into both incidents with support from the FBI’s Columbia Field Office and SC State's Department of Public Safety. Those with information are urged to come forward immediately. Tips may be submitted confidentially or anonymously through any of the following channels:

The shooting in the vicinity of Hugine Suites took the life of 19-year-old Jaliyah Butler of Saluda, South Carolina, a guest who was visiting friends on the campus during the university’s annual Homecoming celebration. A second shooting occurred in the vicinity of Poplar Hall, critically injuring a male visitor.

SC State President Alexander Conyers also announced the addition of new fencing along the perimeter of the campus and additional security patrols to better control pedestrian access. Crews are scheduled to complete repairs to damaged perimeter barriers and install new upgraded fencing.
