Design better infrastructure with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from SC State

If the science behind roads, bridges, dams, utility systems, buildings, railroads and airports intrigues you, a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from South Carolina State University is right up your alley.
The Civil Engineering (CE) program prepares graduates to apply knowledge of mathematics and physics for analysis, design, and management of the civil infrastructural systems and assume careers as professional engineers.

Fire Protection Engineering Option

Along with a traditional civil engineering degree, SC State offers a concentration in fire protection engineering. The fire protection program will prepare one to use the knowledge of fire prevention and suppression to design and recommend equipment to assist multiple organizations in safeguarding life and property against fire and related hazards.
The addition of the concentration was prompted by needs expressed by officials at Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) for engineers with expertise in fire protection.
The Society for Fire Protection Engineers defines FPE as “the application of the principles of engineering and science to protect people and their environment from destructive fire. Fire Protection Engineering includes analysis of the hazards, mitigation of fire damage by proper design, construction, and arrangement of buildings, materials, structures, industrial processes, and transportation systems. It also includes design, installation, maintenance of fire detection and suppression, communication systems, post-fire investigation and analysis."

Accreditation

The Civil Engineering Program at South Carolina State University is “accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and Civil Engineering and similarly named programs' Program Criteria.

Civil Engineering Program Educational Objectives:

  • Graduates are acknowledged in their profession as capable designers, developers, implementers, and professionals who are able to improve integrated systems that include people, materials, information, equipment, and energy using appropriate analytical, computational, and experimental practices.
  • Graduates continue to apply information technologies in post-graduate work and their professions to the practice of civil engineering.
  • Graduates are able to conduct themselves in a professional and ethical manner and provide meaningful contributions to graduate work and industry.
  • Work and communicate effectively with colleagues at every level in the organization.

Civil Engineering Student Outcomes

A graduate with a Civil Engineering degree from SC State has the ability to:

  • Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • Apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  • Communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  • Recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  • Function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  • Develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  • Acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
