Audrey McCrary-Quarles

Dr. Audrey McCrary-Quarles is a professor within the Health and Physical Education Unit. She is a Certified First Aid and CPR Instructor, a Certified Health Education Specialist, Certified Dementia Practitioners, and Quality Matters Certified Peer Reviewer. McCrary-Quarles teaches undergraduate Health Education courses, and graduate courses in the Education and Healthcare Management Programs.

Also, she has received funding (in collaboration with other faculty) from Federal and State grants focusing on the reduction of Health Disparities among minority populations within South Carolina. These grants involve community engagement and outreach activities related to Breast & Prostate Cancer Awareness; COVID-19 and Vaccine Hesitancy among Blacks; Career Awareness in Sustainable Resources for Minority Students; and the Recruitment of Faculty for Alzheimer's Research. McCrary-Quarles serves as an advisor for many students within his department, and a mentor to students outside the department who are working on various grants with her. 

Education

  • BS in Biology from Emory University
  • MSA in Health Services Administration from Central Michigan University
  • Ph.D. in Education, with a Health Education focus from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Background

She is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, and moved to South Carolina in 2008 after receiving my doctorate.  McCrary-Quarles has over 15 years of experience working in the healthcare arena and 14 years of teaching in higher education.  She enjoys working with students of all ages, including older adults. His motto is, “You are never too young or too old to learn about ways to enhance your body, mind, and spirit for a healthier life.” 

Research Interests

Her research interest centers around reducing Health Disparities among minority groups, Cancer awareness and prevention, Alzheimer’s awareness, promoting healthy aging, injury prevention, and agriculture-related career awareness for minority youth.
