SC State Board of Trustees leadership team offers consistency following unanimous re-election
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The South Carolina State University Board of Trustees re-elected its leadership
team to two-year terms at the board’s third-quarter meeting on Sept. 19.
Chairman Douglas D. Gantt and Vice Chairwoman Macie P. Smith received unanimous support
from their fellow trustees.
“I appreciate the confidence our colleagues on the board have shown Dr. Smith and
me,” Gantt said. “I firmly believe that we are a united board with a common vision
for the achievements of South Carolina State University and its students.
“As SC State alumni, Dr. Smith and I have a sacred duty to uphold the values instilled
in us by our alma mater, and that means providing steadfast stewardship in our roles
on the board,” Gantt said. “Consistency is key for the growth of any institution,
and I want to assure all stakeholders that SC State is on a steady course for ongoing
success.”
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of SC State University charged by the state of South Carolina
to oversee the operation and management of the university.
About Douglas D. Gantt
Gantt is a resident of North Augusta, South Carolina, and is in leadership at Pfizer
Inc., an American multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology corporation.
He has served on the board from the 2nd Congressional District since 2019.
He earned his Bachelor of Applied Science from SC State in 1984 and his Master of
Arts in criminal justice from Troy University in 2003.
About Macie P. Smith
Smith is a licensed social worker/gerontologist and CEO of Diversified Training Consultants
Group. She is an award-winning Alzheimer's and dementia educator and author with over
22 years of experience working with aging and vulnerable populations.
She has served on the Board of Trustees since 2021.
She earned her Bachelor of Social Work from SC State in 1995, her Master of Arts in
rehabilitation counseling from SC State in 2002, and her Doctor of Education in higher
education leadership from Nova Southeastern University in 2011.
