SC State University launches Summer Bridge Pilot Program to boost student success and retention
ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- South Carolina State University on Monday launched its Summer Bridge Pilot Program, an intensive initiative designed to improve first-year student success, retention and graduation rates.
The program is made possible through generous funding from the National Institute for Student Success (NISS).
On Monday, 25 incoming first-year students arrived on campus to participate in the immersive two-part program, which includes in-person instruction and campus engagement through July 3, followed by virtual academic support and enrichment from July 7-31.
“This program is a bold step forward in how we prepare our students for success,” said Dr. David Staten, associate provost for academic affairs. “Thanks to support from NISS, we are able to create a hands-on, wraparound experience that builds confidence, fosters academic discipline, and connects students to the resources and people who will support them throughout their college journey.”
Summer Bridge Program highlights:
- Academic courses: Students will complete English 150 with Dr. Donald Lee and History 250 with Dr. Susan Kwosek.
- Targeted tutoring: Nine faculty and peer mentors will support students in high-demand subjects such as English, Math, Biology, Chemistry, and Accounting.
- ·Campus connections: Students will engage with key departments including Financial Aid, Counseling, Career Services, Global Engagement, and the Center for Online and Distance Education.
- Workshops and enrichment: Study skills seminars, transition to college life, scholarship and career planning, and student-led activities offer a comprehensive approach to development.
“This is more than a summer program -- it’s a launchpad,” said Tyron Clinton, director of SC State’s Student Success Center and lead coordinator of the Summer Bridge Pilot Program. “We’re equipping students with the tools, strategies, and relationships they need to thrive in their first year and beyond. The response from students and families has been overwhelmingly positive.”
The Summer Bridge Pilot Program aligns directly with SC State’s broader student success strategy.
“Our mission is not only to enroll students, but to graduate them,” said Dr. Frederick M.G. Evans, SC State provost and vice president for academic affairs. “By investing in programs like the Summer Bridge Program, we’re laying the foundation for long-term academic achievement and institutional excellence. We’re grateful to NISS for helping make this vision a reality.”
