Funeral services for Arthur Snipe Jr., a former SC State basketball standout and Hall of Famer, set for Saturday

ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State University joins the family of former SC State basketball standout and Bulldog Athletics Hall of Famer Arthur Snipe Jr. in mourning his passing.

Snipe, 67, of Irmo, South Carolina, died April 18 at Prisma Heart Hospital.

A Wando, South Carolina native and Wando High School graduate, Snipe was a standout basketball player for four seasons (1976-1980) at SC State, where he ranked among the nation’s top rebounders during his career.

He led the Bulldogs in rebounds in 1978-79

(8.6 per game) and 1979-1980 (9.4 per game) and averaged double-figure scoring most of his career, with a high of 16.1 points per game as a senior.

He was an All-MEAC first-team selection three seasons (1978-1980) and was named an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American in 1980. He played for the late Dr. Tim Autry at SC State.

Snipe was inducted into the SC State’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.

After earning his bachelor’s degree from SC State, Snipe went on to a professional career in the Fourth Street Semi-Pro League with the Venture Raiders. Following his pro career, he was a longtime educator and actively involved in community and civic endeavors in the Irmo area.

Snipe is survived by his wife of almost 35 years, Shirley Snipe, and two daughters, Sharolyn Ariel Snipe and Audra Shirelle Snipe, all of the home. 

A public visitation will be held today (Friday, Apr. 24) from 1-6 p.m. at the JP Holley Funeral Home Northeast Chapel, 9010 Farrow Road, Columbia, South Carolina.

A celebration of life service will be conducted Saturday, Apr. 25, 2026, at 11 a.m. at First Nazareth Baptist Church, 2351 Gervais Street, Columbia. 

Interment will follow in the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 7100 Garners Ferry Road, in Columbia.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the South Carolina State Foundation in memory of Arthur Snipe Jr., PO Box 7187, Orangeburg, SC.
