Apply for Financial Assistance at South Carolina State University

Need financial assistance for tuition, housing, or other expenses? Discover a wide variety of scholarships available to you through the South Carolina State University, the state, and our Alumni Association. You can choose from need-based or merit scholarships to help pay for your education at SC State.

As you explore scholarships, be sure to make note of any requirements and interest rates that can help inform your decision to accept financial aid awards. If a scholarship has stipulations, you must fulfill them in order to apply the scholarship toward your tuition and fees.

Institutional Scholarships

General University Scholarship

This tuition-only scholarship is available to incoming freshmen students. It is available for two semesters, although it is renewable for six.
To be considered for a General scholarship, you must:

  • graduate high school with at least a 3.25-grade point average (GPA) on a uniform grading scale;
  • achieve a score of at least 1100 (critical reading and math combined) on the SAT I test or 24 on the ACT test.

To be considered for scholarship renewal, you must:

  • maintain full-time student status;
  • achieve a 3.25 cumulative GPA at SC State;
  • make satisfactory degree-specific academic progress each semester;
  • be in good standing with your major department;
  • not violate any of the standing rules and/or regulations of the University. Violation will automatically disqualify you from further support through the scholarship program.

Presidential Scholarships

As a recipient of this scholarship—instituted by former SC State president Dr. M.M. Nance, Jr. in 1978—you will receive a full scholarship (tuition, room and board) during eight semesters.
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • graduate high school with at least a 3.50 GPA on a uniform grading scale;
  • achieve a score of at least 1200 (critical reading and math combined) on the SAT I test or 27 on the ACT test.

To be considered for scholarship renewal, you must:

  • maintain full-time student status;
  • achieve a 3.50 cumulative GPA at SC State;
  • make satisfactory degree-specific academic progress each semester;
  • be in good standing with your major department;
  • not violate any of the standing rules and/or regulations of the University. Violation will automatically disqualify you from further support through the scholarship program.

SC State University Achievers Scholarship

This tuition-only scholarship for juniors and seniors may be awarded to you if you are currently enrolled in SC State University and have excelled academically over the prior year. The awards are renewable for two, four, or six years.
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • be enrolled at SC State the prior academic year as a freshman, sophomore, or junior;
  • earn a 3.50 GPA or higher.

To be considered for scholarship renewal, you must:

  • have earned your next academic rank (sophomore, junior, or senior);
  • maintain full-time student status;
  • achieve a 3.50 cumulative GPA at South Carolina State University;
  • make satisfactory degree-specific academic progress each semester;
  • be in good standing with your major department;
  • not violate any of the standing rules and/or regulations of the University. Violation will automatically disqualify you from further support through the scholarship program

South Carolina Scholarships

Hope Scholarship

This scholarship is designed to assist you with tuition and room and board. It is valued at $2,800 ($1,400 per semester).
You may qualify if you are an incoming freshman, and meet the following criteria:

  • graduate high school with a 3.0 GPA on a uniform grading scale;
  • be a resident of South Carolina at the time of your high school graduation.

LIFE Scholarship

The LIFE Scholarship is designed to help you cover tuition and room and board. It is valued at $5,000 ($2,500 per semester). To qualify, you must be an incoming freshman who graduated high school in-state, and meet two out of the three following qualifications:

  • graduate high school with a 3.0 GPA on a uniform grading scale;
  • achieve a score of at least 1100 (critical reading and math combined) on the SAT I test or 24 on the ACT test;
  • rank in the upper 30% of your high school graduating class.

This scholarship is awarded for two semesters and is renewable for six semesters if you meet the following criteria:

  • maintain full-time student status;
  • achieve a 3.0 cumulative LIFE GPA;
  • remain in good standing with your major department;
  • do not violate any of the standing rules and/or regulations of the University. Violation will automatically disqualify you from further support through the scholarship program.
