ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State University’s Career Center has named Boeing its 2024 Employer of the Year.

Boeing has partnered with SC State by providing students with internships and career opportunities, including four internships for the summer of 2024.

In addition to the partnership and winning Employer of the Year, SC State’s Career Center has dedicated an office space in the name of Boeing.

“All I want to tell students is to bring what you have and we will help you get what you need to start your career,” Career Center Director Joseph B. Thomas Jr. said. “This is the pinnacle of success, and these are the positions we want our students to be in, so when they graduate from SC State, they will get the best of both worlds. We want to thank Boeing for providing these opportunities to our students.”

Boeing increased its commitment by adding more internships this year.

“My experience was great,” said Iyanna Zimmerman, who interned at Boeing this summer. “It was a great experience meeting new people, learning new skills, and doing some things that could develop into a long-term career.”

After Zimmerman’s internship with Boeing, she was offered a full-time position.

Other interns also had good things to say.

“I did my second internship this past summer with Boeing,” SC State mechatronics engineering major Omar Shaheed said. “Even as an engineering major, I was more on the business side of things at Boeing -- it’s a lot that you can do and many places that you can go.”

Shaheed is also an ambassador for the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF).

The Boeing Company and TMCF announced a $8 million, multi-year partnership to support campus recruitment initiatives, career immersion activities, TMCF Leadership Institute programming, and student scholarships at HBCUs through 2026.

“We are a diverse company,” Boeing team member Shawn Burgess said, “It’s really cool to see that we’re the employer of the year because, we started our campus team at Boeing South Carolina 12 years ago when I was brand new at Boeing, it’s exciting to see the number of alumni that actually work with-in Boeing.”
