ORANGEBURG, S.C. – At South Carolina State University, Orangeburg residents Akiah Moorer and her daughter Anaria are sharing the experience of higher education — though not in the same class year.

Akiah, a senior in elementary education, returned to school after years away, while Anaria, a freshman majoring in early childhood education, is just beginning her college journey.

Akiah, who first attended SC State in 2007, took a break from her education to raise her family.

“Life happened, and I dropped out, but I always knew I would come back,” Akiah said.

After working as a nurse and earning her LPN certification, Akiah returned to college to finish what she started. Now, she is set to graduate in December and is excited about the opportunities ahead in the field of education.

“I love kids, and I want to help shape their minds,” she said. “It’s similar to nursing in that there’s a high demand for educators, so job prospects are great.”

Anaria, a freshman at SC State, was initially hesitant about attending the same university as her mother, but now she appreciates the connection it provides.

“At first, I was a little hesitant, but now it’s cool to have her here,” Anaria said. “She’s on me all the time, but for the most part, she’s chill.”

For Akiah, having Anaria at SC State has been a rewarding experience.

“It’s fun. I get to check in on her and make sure she has everything she needs,” she said. “It’s like we have a little inside connection here. A lot of students tell me, ‘I saw your daughter!’ or ‘I know her!’”

Anaria, who lives on campus, enjoys the independence that comes with her college experience. She’s also found a welcoming community.

“The campus is open, and you can communicate with a lot of people,” she said. “I would recommend SC State because it’s a good school with strong academics.”

The pair both received honors at a recent ceremony, with Anaria earning the title of Bronze Student and Akiah following suit. For them, their shared experience at SC State is more than just a coincidence — it’s a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of education, no matter the stage of life.

“I’m excited about the future,” Akiah said. “Being able to walk this journey with my daughter has been a blessing.”
