South Carolina State University's College of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences (CEHSS) is focused on preparing you for a career in communicating and working with people. A liberal arts education can serve you in almost any field, and if you're seeking to begin a career in such areas as teaching, acting, art, writing, psychology, or SC State and the CEHSS can provide you with the critical thinking skills and foundational knowledge of humanity and behavior to succeed.
Composed of four departments—the Department of Education, the Department of English and Communication, the Department of Social Sciences, and the Department of Visual and Performing Arts—the CEHSS offers three undergraduate degrees spread across approximately 30 majors. A Bachelor of Arts degree is awarded for the completion of a major in drama, English, modern language, and social sciences programs. Completion of a major in psychology or one of our numerous education programs leads to a Bachelor of Science degree. In addition, CEHSS offers graduate degree programs in Rehabilitation Counseling and Counselor Education.
In addition to providing in-depth and up-to-date instruction in the designated field, each of our programs also provides general education liberal arts courses to ensure you get a well-rounded education. You'll develop essential skills in key areas such as writing, communication, critical thinking, creative problem solving, and much more. These skills will serve not only in your chosen field of study but in almost any profession you take on, as well as in other areas of your life.

Indeed, some of our alumni have gone on to positions in U.S. Federal and Supreme Courts, the National Football League, and the United States Congress. Other graduates have become successful leaders and CEOs, while graduates from our Department of Education—approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education since 1976—have been educating generations of students as teachers, principals, guidance counselors, and superintendents throughout the country.
