Safety Tips for SC State Students
Your safety is a shared responsibility. At SC State, we are committed to maintaining a secure campus environment — and students play an important role in fostering a culture of care, accountability and awareness.
See Something, Say Something
If you see suspicious activity, unusual behavior or something that simply does not feel right — report it immediately.
-
Do not assume someone else has already reported it.
-
Trust your instincts.
-
Contact the Department of Public Safety right away.
-
Use an emergency call box if you need immediate assistance.
Prompt reporting allows officers to respond quickly and helps prevent small concerns from becoming larger issues.
Choose Your Company Wisely
The people you surround yourself with matter.
-
Invite only individuals you know and trust to campus.
-
Inform your guests of university policies before they arrive.
-
Do not bring guests into residence halls who violate university policies.
-
Be mindful of who you allow access to secure spaces.
-
If a guest’s behavior makes you uncomfortable, act immediately and get help.
-
Remember: You are responsible for the conduct of your guests while they are on campus.
Keeping good company protects you, your roommates and your community.
Campus Access and Visitor Screening
To enhance campus security:
-
Visitors are subject to screening at campus entry points.
-
Vehicles may be subject to inspection at campus gates.
-
Non-student visitors must comply with established visiting hours and university policies.
-
Students should be prepared to present a valid university ID when requested.
These measures are in place to protect students, faculty and staff.
Use Campus Safety Resources
-
Save the Department of Public Safety at 803-536-7188 in your phone contacts.
-
Locate the nearest emergency call box when entering any new area of campus.
-
Use emergency call boxes immediately if you feel unsafe or need urgent assistance.
-
Be aware of safety locations and Public Safety patrols across campus.
Emergency call boxes provide direct contact with Public Safety and allow officers to quickly identify your location.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
-
Stay alert when walking on campus, especially at night.
-
Avoid distractions such as texting or wearing both earbuds while walking.
-
Walk in well-lit areas and use designated pathways.
Awareness is your first line of defense.
Travel Smart
-
Walk with a friend whenever possible, particularly after dark.
-
Let someone know your location if you are going off campus.
-
Avoid giving rides to or accepting rides from strangers.
-
If you feel uncomfortable at any point, get to a well-lit public area and contact the Department of Public Safety or use an emergency call box.
Secure Your Space
-
Lock residence hall doors and windows at all times.
-
Do not prop open exterior doors.
-
Do not let unknown individuals “tailgate” into secured buildings.
-
Keep valuables out of sight and register electronics when possible.
Emergency Preparedness
-
Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes in residence halls and academic buildings.
-
Sign up for campus emergency alerts and keep your contact information updated.
-
Follow official university communication channels for timely updates during incidents.
In an emergency, follow directions from the Department of Public Safety and university officials.
Firearms Are Prohibited on Campus
Firearms and other prohibited weapons are not permitted on university property.
-
Students, visitors and guests may not carry or store firearms on campus.
-
This prohibition applies to residence halls, academic buildings, vehicles and outdoor spaces.
-
Violations may result in disciplinary action and/or criminal charges.
If you become aware of a weapon on campus, immediately contact the Department of Public Safety or use an emergency call box.
Victim Advocacy and Support Services
Students impacted by violence, harassment or misconduct are not alone.
Available resources include:
-
Victim advocacy services at the Department of Public Safety
-
Counseling and mental health support
-
Academic or housing adjustments
-
Referrals to medical and community resources
Victim advocates can help you understand your options, navigate reporting processes and access services — at your pace.
Seeking help is a sign of strength.
Title IX Reporting: Know Your Rights
SC State does not tolerate sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating or domestic violence, stalking or gender-based discrimination.
If you experience or witness misconduct:
-
Report concerns to the university’s Title IX coordinator at 803-516-4549.

You may report whether you are directly involved or supporting a friend.
